A new YouGov poll commissioned by The Association for the Cannabinoid Industry (The ACI) demonstrates overwhelming support for recent FSA guidance concerning CBD and support for FSA CBD regulation.

The Association for the Cannabinoid Industry recently issued a poll in conjunction with YouGov, which demonstrates overwhelming public support for regulation of CBD products in the UK from the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

The poll also gave insight into CBD usage and awareness in the UK population, highlighting that 71% of respondents were aware of CBD, with 16% of them having already purchased a CBD product.

Dr Andy Yates, The ACI Pharmacy Lead, said: “This new poll demonstrates that the public have a clear view regarding regulation of CBD; they want more of it and the FSA can be assured that they have overwhelming support for the new measures they have introduced.”

CBD regulation in the UK

The FSA recently reviewed the evidence on CBD products and found potential adverse health effects from consumption. They set a deadline of the 31 March, 2021 for businesses that produce CBD based products to provide more information about CBD products and their contents.

They also offered CBD safety advice to vulnerable groups, such as pregnant women, who were advised not to take CBD products, and healthy adults not to take more than 70mg a day.

When respondents were asked how much they support or oppose the FSA’s decision the response was overwhelmingly positive. A total of 74% had a positive reaction, with only 8% of respondents opposing the guidance.

Sample size for the poll was 2065 and was weighted to represent all British adults aged over 18.

However, when it comes to consumer confidence in CBD products the results were not so positive. Only 29% of respondents declared to be confident that CBD products are labelled with the correct information and properly tested by a regulatory authority. 45% responded that they were not confident that CBD products are labelled with the correct information and properly tested by a regulatory authority.

Outlining a legal vision for CBD

Next week (16-17 March), The ACI will be diamond sponsor of the Global CBD Summit , in London.

Steve Moore, The ACI founder, will outline The ACI’s vision for a legal and sustainable UK CBD industry which puts consumer safety first in his keynote address. Following this, Dr Parveen Bhatarah, The ACI Regulatory Lead, will hold a roundtable discussion covering work The ACI are undertaking to make this a reality.

Dr Parveen Bhatarah, The ACI Regulatory Lead, said: “Recently the FSA has taken a positive step by providing regulatory clarity. This will lay the foundations of a legal and trustworthy CBD industry in the UK. The public is very aware of this and their positive reaction to guidance from the FSA reinforces the need for such leadership.”
